House Passes Cable Competition Bill
06/11/08TV4US Spokesman Randy Hayden issued the following statement today regarding the House of Representatives’ passage of Senate Bill 807, the Consumer Choice for Television Act.
Consumers in Louisiana want cable competition and the ability to choose their video provider. But the current system of local franchise agreements stands in the way of real competition. Nearly two years ago, the Louisiana State Legislature passed HB 699, the Competitive Cable & Video Services Act, which would have brought competition and choice to the cable TV market. Despite passing by overwhelming majorities in the legislature, former Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco vetoed the legislation. That delay has cost consumers in Louisiana nearly $227 million. Cable rates continue to rise unabated and have increased as much as 65% in the state since 2000.
Do you want to waste another $227 million on excessive cable fees for the same old technology? We have an opportunity to finally get competition and choice here in Louisiana. The legislature will soon be considering HB 1009 and SB 807, the Consumer Choice for Television Act, which will reform the video franchise laws that hinder competition. It is time that Louisiana joined the 18 other states that have passed video franchise reform in order to bring real competition to cable TV and stop the tide of regular cable rate increases.
States all around Louisiana are beginning to see the benefits of competition in video services. These benefits include increased technology, more programming choices, expanded access to new services, and better customer service. It is time that Louisiana reaped the benefits of cable competition too.
